🌋 Mount Fuji & Baking Fun Fact!

Mount Fuji (3,776 m) is Japan’s tallest volcano and sits on a volcanic island arc formed by tectonic plate collisions. Japanese bakers have created “Fuji-san” shaped cakes and melon bread inspired by its iconic snow-capped cone. The same tectonic forces that give Japan its beautiful mountains also make it one of the most earthquake-prone countries on Earth! 🍰🌋

✏️ Worked Example — Read This First!

Explain how mountains affect climate using the rain shadow effect.
Full Solution
1
Moist air approaches the mountain.
Wind carries warm, moist air from the ocean toward a mountain range.
2
Air rises and cools (windward side).
As the air is forced upward, it cools. Cool air cannot hold as much moisture, so clouds form and heavy rain/snow falls on the windward side.
3
Dry air descends (leeward side).
After passing over the peak, the air has lost most of its moisture. It descends, warms, and creates dry conditions on the leeward side.
4
Result: rain shadow.
The leeward side receives very little rain and may become a desert.
Windward = wet; Leeward = dry (rain shadow). Example: Cascade Range in Washington State (wet Seattle vs. dry eastern WA).

🐱 Did You Know?

Japan has over 160 active volcanoes — more than almost any other country! But here is something even more surprising: Japan also has more than 10 million pet cats. Japanese “cat cafés” (neko café) are a cultural phenomenon partly because many apartment buildings near volcanically active areas are too small for large pets. Geography shapes even our choice of pets! 🌋🐱
